Therapeutic Personal Blends

Blends can be created for the sheer aromatic pleasure of the blend and are suitable for personal or room fragrance. Essential oil blends can also be created for specific therapeutic purposes like easing aching muscles, minimizing the occurrence of acne or cold-sores, indigestion, reducing winter “blahs” and so on.

Essential oils that are inhaled into the lungs offer both psychological and physical benefits. Not only does the aroma of the natural essential oil stimulate the brain to trigger a reaction, but when inhaled into the lungs, the natural constituents (naturally occurring chemicals) can supply therapeutic benefit. Diffusing eucalyptus essential oil to help ease congestion is a prominent example.

Essential oils that are applied to the skin can be absorbed into the bloodstream. The constituents of essential oils can aid in health, beauty and hygiene, and skin conditions. To apply essential oils to the skin, essential oils are typically diluted into a carrier such as a cold pressed olive oil, also known as a carrier oil. Common carrier oils include sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil and grapeseed oil. However, with therapeutic blends (depending upon the issue to be addressed), undiluted forms are frequently utilized.

Essential oils can also be taken orally. HOWEVER... not all oils are safe for this type of use. If you are unsure about the safety of the oil or the quality, please do not take it internally. Essential oils do not generally taste good and can be very strong to the senses. There are a variety of ways to take these oils internally. They can be added to liquids to drink, or to a tablespoon of honey to swallow. There are gel-caps that the oils can be added to for internal consumption. Therapeutic blends made for internal use include a digestive blend to help with nausea, gas, or heartburn. Some oils can be used orally for cold/flu symptoms or allergies.

In addition to therapeutic benefit at the emotional and physical level, essential oils are helpful in other applications. Essential oils can be used in household and laundry cleaners. Some oils act as a natural insect repellent and pesticide. You may recall using citronella candles during the summer to keep mosquitoes away. Citronella essential oil is the ingredient in the candles that is responsible for repelling the mosquitos.

Benefits: Therapeutic blends are individually created towards a client’s specific needs and requests. Blends often work in synergy with Western medical modalities, but are not a replacement. Often times due to the action of the essential oils, bacterial and viral infections are eliminated quickly and without resistance development. Moreover, having a personalized blend made allows for recipe alterations to accommodate smell, strength, and concentration.

Considerations: Therapeutic blends may be utilized topically, orally or by aroma. Some oils are “hot” oils that may cause skin-sensitivity or a burning sensation. Sun-sensitivity is also an adverse reaction of select oils. This phototoxicity or otherwise also known as photosensitization occurs when certain essential oils causes the skin to be more sensitive to sunlight (actually any ultra violet - UV - light); and one would therefore burn and damage more easily. Should phototoxic oil be used in aromatherapy massage, one should not suntan for at least 12 hours after the massage. The best way to reduce the effects of a topical essential oil is to dilute it with vegetable or olive oil.
